The Greater Iowa City Area HBA Names 2020 Award Winners

The Greater Iowa City Area HBA presented its yearly awards during its virtual Annual Meeting Nov. 12. Awards recipients are:

2020 Builder of the Year:  McCreedy-Ruth Construction
In recognition for outstanding and dedicated service to the building industry.

McCreedy-Ruth Construction was founded in 1997 by Kevin McCreedy and Tim Ruth. Sam Jones became a partner earlier this year. Kevin and Tim have been leaders in the HBA, especially in the workforce development arena. McCreedy-Ruth was integral last summer in National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) student chapter Durant High School obtaining a trailer and skid steer by being the sponsor organization and spearheading the purchase process. In October, the company was spotlighted by Iowa Ideas for demonstrating the success of apprenticeships for workforce development. 2020 Associate of the Year:  Sandy Steil, MMS Consultants
In appreciation of time and dedication to The Greater Iowa City Area HBA.

Sandy just completed her first year as the Iowa City Area HBA’s Women’s Council representative to the association’s Board of Directors and will continue that role next year. She takes time to give HBA leaders perspectives they don’t have and provides insight on development plans to come early in the process. During the summer, Sandy was recognized with an Ovation honor by the Iowa Women’s Foundation for her role in creating the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Home Improvement Confidence Course for Women, which taught hands-on home-improvement skills. 2020 Remodeler of the Year:  Josh Anderson, Bea Day Plumbers
In recognition for dedicated efforts in the remodeling industry.

Josh owns Bea Day Plumbers and is a long-time supporter of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity (IVHFH). During 2020, Josh – an NAHB Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist – helped the nonprofit complete an Aging-in-Place project for a couple suffering debilitating illnesses. Additionally, in February, the Iowa City Area HBA received a request through its Remodelers Council’s Housing Trust Fund of Johnson County grant to fix water issues from a woman who lived with her young granddaughter. Before the application was even approved, Josh and Bea Day Plumbers replaced the hot water heater to stop a leak and restore hot water to the home. 2020 Industry Partner: Star Equipment
In recognition for commitment to the building industry’s future.

Star Equipment aided Durant High School in buying a trailer and skid steer last summer so the school could offer students the rare opportunity to graduate knowledgeable about how to safely operate a piece of equipment, a qualification that makes them highly marketable and critical assets to the skilled-trades workforce shortage. Vice President Brad Bowman (pictured right with Sales Manager Mitch McDonough) met with representatives to learn about the project and then discounted the package to make it affordable and allow funding in hand adequate for the purchase. Additionally, the company helped secure funds toward the purchase, even donating itself. Star Equipment also added extra features to ensure student safety.
